11377 LEGO® Icons The Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith™ revealed: Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of The Lord of the Rings

It was December 27, 2001. The Knoller in Chief and I went to the movies to celebrate our fourth wedding anniversary, as well as to enjoy a quiet night out with our two young children. It is hard to believe that this is now 25 years ago. Over the next few years, our wedding anniversary would be recognised as a chance to get out of the house together and catch up with the latest cinematic sage being released in the post Christmas period. We had both grown up with the Lord of the Rings and seeing the story translated into film was a defining moment in popculture for us both.

After the original run of sets based on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit from over a decade ago, we have been getting a steady drip feed of related sets over the past few years: Starting with Rivendell, we have seen Barad-Dur and Bag End as ‘regular’ display sets, while we have also seen a selection of Brick Headz, a book nook, and more recently, Sauron’s Helmet. While our display spaces rapidly diminish, today, the LEGO Group are revealing their latest model: 11377 LEGO Icons The Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith.

This latest set will be available at the start of June (1st for LEGO Insiders, 4th for everyone else). It comes with 8278 pieces – measures over 23.5 in. (59cm) high, 24.5 in. (62 cm) wide, and 14.5 in. (37 cm) deep, and comes with 10 minfigures. It will be priced at $AUD 999.99 / £579.99 / €649.99 / $649.99.

Let’s find out more…

The Press Release:

In partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, the LEGO Group today unveiled the LEGO® Icons The Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith™ – 25th Anniversary Legacy Collection, an impressive new building set designed for adult fans and collectors celebrating a quarter century of The Lord of the Rings.

Crafted from 8,278 pieces, this highly detailed set recreates the majestic city of Gondor – the legendary White City of Minas Tirith™. Designed as a striking display model, the build captures the towering architecture, layered walls and iconic citadel that defined one of Middle-earth’s most memorable locations.

The set features a hybrid-scale design, combining an expansive microscale cityscape with richly detailed minifigure-scale interior scenes. From afar, builders can admire the sweeping skyline and defensive walls of Minas Tirith. Up close, they can explore key interior spaces, including the throne room of the citadel, where pivotal moments from the story unfold.

To bring the world of Middle-earth to life, the set includes 10 minifigures and the legendary Shadowfax™ horse figure. Characters featured in the set include Gandalf™ the White, Faramir, Denethor, Peregrin Took™, Aragorn™ as King Elessar, Arwen™, and four Soldiers of Gondor, along with themed accessories such as Gondor helmets, shields and Aragorn’s crown.

At AUD1000, this is not a playset, so much as a model to display and explore the environs of the city: the model switches scales, with spaces to display your minfigures, along with soaring towers in microscale to add some awe. I appreciate the locations represented, particularly the throne room and library, as well as the design of the Palantir, through which Aragorn distracts Sauron.

I appreciate the minifigure collection: Gondor was under represented in the original wave, save for the Black Gate set. To get some soldiers, including Peregrine Took, Faramir and Denethor gives us all that we need in this city. Arwen, and Aragorn as King Elessar round the minfigure selection out nicely. Looking at this picture, it would seem that Aragorn has had his sword apgraded to Anduril, compared with his weapon in Rivendell

40893 Grond: The Gift With Purchase

But if that was setting about disuading you from the purchase, there is the inevetiable Gift With Purchase: 40893 LEGO Icons The Lord of the Rings: Grond. Bringing the battering ram used by Sauron’s army in their attack on Minas Tirith, this wolf shaped battering ram comes with two orcs from Mordor

Scaled to suit the main gates of the city, it leaves you with an overbearing desire to start army building, in order to replicate Sauron’s Hordes.

I would love to see the Fell Beast, the GWP that came with Barad Dur make a return, particularly due to its role in the Battle of Pellanor Fields, just outside the city.

My thoughts

Rivendell, with around 5000 pieces, priced at AUD 800 represents reasonable value for money, and brought one of the best building experiences I have ever had. Now I have to decide whether or not I wish to invest $1000AUD/$650USD to see if this set comes close to matching it.

It leaves me feeling torn. But I am a sucker for the story, and this key location has not been repesented in LEGO form in the past. I don’t have an early release copy, so I think this is one I will need to invest in for myself. But will it get built or merely consigned to the Cupboard of Good Intentions? Perhaps I’ll let it sit on the store shelves for a while, and pick it up in six months or so?

Certainly, the footprint of this set leaves me feeling somewhat intimidated, to say nothing about wondering how we would keep it clean.

Between Rivendell (75cm), Barad Dur (45cm), the Shire (45cm) and this (62cm) you are needing around two and a half meters of display space. If only the IKEA x LEGO collaboration from a few years ago extended to make a deeper BILLY bookshelf to allow for models deeper than 30cm…

  1. Oh! Em! Gee! Just when one thinks it’s safe to go back into the water, LEGO comes up with this!! The price tag is no surprise even with the ‘gift’, but even after factoring in the obligatory light set, & display case, for the true believer, this is a must have. Sorry kids, I’ve just transferred your inheritance to my LEGO account.

  2. Oh no! At this point LEGO is only competing with itself for my hard earned money. I was saving up for Rivendell but now I’m wavering. I really like this set also.

Also, the White Tree part of this build looks profoundly disappointing. I mean for how important it is to the visual design of Minas Tirith(including the armor), the treebuild itself seems like a tragic afterthought. If I get this, the tree would be the first thing I would try to modify!

  3. That display space problem only gets worse if you have the original Tower of Orthanc to the list.
