Nightmare Scorpion Digger 71513, an issue with construction [review]

LEGO set featuring the Nightmare Scorpion Digger 71513 with mini-figures, a crystal, and spiders, highlighted with colorful pieces.

Branko woke up from a dream wondering if Construction Equipment was on the way out. He couldn’t get back to sleep until he came up with the answer…

In January 2026 LEGO will release another wave of Dreamzzz sets and the balance between ‘dream’ and ‘nightmare’ seems solidly to have swung towards ‘Dream’. There is only 1 set out of 5 in the wave that is considered a nightmare, and it is the smallest of the lot at that. Cue “Nightmare Scorpion Digger 71513”, coming in at 505 pieces for AU$79.99/£44.99/US$49.99/€49.99. This is not a small set, it’s just the smallest of the lot (read more on that here).

The sets in this series are all associated with animals, and some machinery, but it struck me that this particular one is very strongly related to construction equipment. In recent years fans of Technic have been complaining a bit about a reduction of the number of construction equipment sets, so this left me wondering. Has construction gotten into bad books? Is digging holes no longer considered cool?

Join me as we have a quick look to see if Technic fans are objectively correct in their gripe, and then we will cheerfully ignore that and have a look at how construction equipment is used to create this particular nightmare creature.

This set was generously gifted by LEGO, but the expressed opinions are my own.

Tiger! Shark! Tank! – 71515 [review]

A colorful LEGO set featuring the Tiger Shark Tank from Dreamzzz, showcasing a large shark with various attachments and accessories, along with minifigures and crystal creatures.

Branko’s been thinking a lot about Dreamzzz lately. Here is his first formal review for the wave:

I imagine the brainstorm sessions for the latest wave of Dreamzzz sets went something like this. Get a group of children in a room as ask them what they like. They all start shouting and words get thrown onto a whiteboard “Tigers! Knights! Tanks! Diggers! Sharks! Swords! Dinosaurs!” with a subdued “classic space” or “classic castle” mumbled by an aging adult LEGO fan in the back of the room. All that remained was to group these terms together and you end up with something like this Tiger Shark Tank.

A colorful LEGO set depicting the Tiger Shark Tank, featuring a tiger-striped shark front and tank tracks, showcasing intricate design and various LEGO elements.

This set ticks the boxes of having buzzwords, or clickbait, to make sure to appeal to as many sensibilities as possible. Not only is there a shark, and a tiger mixed, there is a reference to Black Falcon castle, another to Pirates and then there is a tank. The only thing to widen the appeal more was to add Space to the mix, but Mr Oz has done that plenty in previous iterations of Dreamzzz.

A LEGO minifigure with white hair and glasses, wearing a blue torso with a planet graphic.

71515 Tiger Shark Tank contains 1548 pieces and retails for AU$229.99/£129.99/$139.99/€139.99. Follow me to read why you want this set.

DREAMZZz Comes in on a Budget in 2024:71471 Mateo’s Off-Road Car review

LEGO® DREAMZZz brought us some of the more interesting and creative sets during the course of the year, and the new wave is no exception. While covering a relatively diverse range of source material, the sets were relatively expensive, with no sets priced with an RRP less than $AUD34.999 [(Mateo and Z-Blob ; Bunchu Bunny]. The latest wave may be a little smaller, with only 5 boxed sets in the wave, but we have 2 sets under $AUD25, and none over $AUD150/USD 90. LET’s take a quick look the smallest set in the wave: 71472 Mateo’s Off Road Car.

71461 Fantastical Tree House [ Hands On Review]

As a kid, I loved the idea of a treehouse: a place to escape and refashion the world in my image, where my dreams could come true. As my kids grew up, they would have great fun hiding out with their cousins in the Treehouse my father built for them. I suspect this love of arboreal habitation is not restricted to my family, as we have seen multiple LEGO treehouses popping up every year for the last decade. They ensure Kids have a place to call their own and think big.

The 71461 Fantastical Tree House is another of the heroes’ location sets, released as part of the first wave of LEGO DREAMZzz in August 2023. These builds are set in a dream world, where objects are shaped by the imaginations of the dream-crafting heroes of our Story, Izzie and Mateo and their friends. With 1257 pieces, this is the second-largest set in the wave. It has 4 minifigures, 3 ‘li’l guys’ and two buildable characters. With multiple rooms, personal spaces and striking blue foliage, this set has a lot to offer.

71455 Grimkeeper the Cage Monster. Is this one of the most terrifying LEGO® sets of the modern era?

You look around and suddenly find yourself in a fantastical world, full of colour and wonder.

Suddenly it appears before you: a tall skeletal creature with glowing eyes and a mouth full of yellowish-green teeth. You take another look. There, where its belly should be, is a cage. In that cage, you see the sleeping body of your best friend. It is now up to you to save them, and you have no idea what is going on. Truly the stuff of nightmares.

Is this one of the most terrifying LEGO Sets ever?

We have looked at Hero-centric sets in the upcoming DREAMZzz theme so far. Today, I thought we would turn our attention to one of the servants of the Nightmare King: 71455 Grimkeeper the Cage Monster. This gangly creature with spindly claws gathers sleeping dreamers for the Nightmare King. Several versions of the character exist throughout the first wave of LEGO DREAMZzz sets, but this is the largest and most detailed. Let’s take a closer look.

Is 71460 Dr Oz’s Spacebus an iconic spaceship for a new generation?

When the LEGO® DREAMZzz theme was first revealed, the images for Dr Oz’s Spacebus were the ones that really grabbed my eye: Could this be the iconic LEGO® spaceship for a new generation of kids? And what about Dr Oz, whose torso print onscreen features a blue woollen jumper incorporating a Classic Space Logo. As a LEGO Space Fan of a certain age, I feel that this COULD be the one figure I really want, and the one LEGO Character I have ever felt a desire to Cosplay as…

How will this work out for me?

  4. Little Guys *unofficial title*

71454 Mateo and Z-Blob Robot [Hands-On Review]

LEGO DREAMZzz is shaping up to be one of the most significant theme launches in the recent history of the LEGO group – with an original IP, an appealing story, as well as the wide open scope for storytelling in the dream realm, the scope for creativity is endless. Lots of the appealing aspects of this new theme are seen in 71454Matteo and Z-Blob the Robot, which is where I will start my reviews. You can find it on YouTube and Netflix if you have not yet caught up with the animated series. It’s reasonably engaging, even for an adult who has allegedly outgrown such things.

Lets read on… This review features UV lighting and home-built dream realms using cardboard, glue and cotton wool.
