71508 Fox Guardian Mech (or could it be a flying fox?) [review]

Green and gold, favourite national colours in Australia, but I think my appreciation for this set has little to do with that. 71508 Fox Guardian Mech is the second smallest set released in the new Dreamzzz wave, coming in at 883 pieces for AU$129.99/£69.99/US$79.99/€79.99. As I mentioned before, these sets are not small or cheap, but they are good!

The official name of this set it ‘Fox Guardian Mech’ and I typically associate the word ‘Mech’ with a large robot occupied by a pilot (like a Jaeger in Pacific Rim, or powered armor like in Avatar). LEGO is partially to blame for this, with so many sets labelled ‘Mech’ containing piloted robots. Ninjago in particular has been releasing mechs with someone driving them. Coming back to this set; this fox does NOT contain a set for someone to drive it so it almost deserves a different qualification. Also, the alternative build could equaly qualify as a Fox Guardian, so should the name perhaps just be Fox Guardian?

Tiger! Shark! Tank! – 71515 [review]

Branko’s been thinking a lot about Dreamzzz lately. Here is his first formal review for the wave:

I imagine the brainstorm sessions for the latest wave of Dreamzzz sets went something like this. Get a group of children in a room as ask them what they like. They all start shouting and words get thrown onto a whiteboard “Tigers! Knights! Tanks! Diggers! Sharks! Swords! Dinosaurs!” with a subdued “classic space” or “classic castle” mumbled by an aging adult LEGO fan in the back of the room. All that remained was to group these terms together and you end up with something like this Tiger Shark Tank.

This set ticks the boxes of having buzzwords, or clickbait, to make sure to appeal to as many sensibilities as possible. Not only is there a shark, and a tiger mixed, there is a reference to Black Falcon castle, another to Pirates and then there is a tank. The only thing to widen the appeal more was to add Space to the mix, but Mr Oz has done that plenty in previous iterations of Dreamzzz.

LEGO DREAMZzz 71481: Izzie’s Dream Creatures Set Review

The first half of the second season of DREAMZzz dropped on Netflix and YouTube a month or so ago, and the next wave of sets will be released on August 1st. I am excited to have been sent these sets by the LEGO Group ahead of their general release. As always, all opinions are my own.

This set will contain minor spoilers for Season 2 regarding the appearances of characters and models in the first 10 episodes.

71481 is the third smallest set of the August 2024 wave of LEGO DREAMZzz sets and one of the more interesting small sets centred on our heroes. It has 328 pieces and a recommended retail price of $AUD59.99/USD39.99/£34.99/€39.99.

71461 Fantastical Tree House [ Hands On Review]

As a kid, I loved the idea of a treehouse: a place to escape and refashion the world in my image, where my dreams could come true. As my kids grew up, they would have great fun hiding out with their cousins in the Treehouse my father built for them. I suspect this love of arboreal habitation is not restricted to my family, as we have seen multiple LEGO treehouses popping up every year for the last decade. They ensure Kids have a place to call their own and think big.

The 71461 Fantastical Tree House is another of the heroes’ location sets, released as part of the first wave of LEGO DREAMZzz in August 2023. These builds are set in a dream world, where objects are shaped by the imaginations of the dream-crafting heroes of our Story, Izzie and Mateo and their friends. With 1257 pieces, this is the second-largest set in the wave. It has 4 minifigures, 3 ‘li’l guys’ and two buildable characters. With multiple rooms, personal spaces and striking blue foliage, this set has a lot to offer.

71453 Izzie and Bunchu Bunny: Skates like a butterfly, stings like a bee?

Today we meet Mateo’s younger sister Izzie. In the Waking World of the characters in LEGO DREAMZzz, Bunchu Bunny is Izzie’s favourite anime character- she has a plush version, and Bunchu decorates her pyjamas. But when she is threatened by the Grimspawn in the Dream realm, Bunchu manifests and helps Izzie and her brother Mateo in their battle against the forces of the Nightmare King. We meet this character early in the series, and it makes sense that it is one of the entry-level sets in the new theme.
