After a seemingly endless parade of Spaceships in 2024, throughout City, Technic, Friends, Classic and Dulplo, it seems that ICONs is trying to scrape through before the 2025 Formula One dominance kicks in. And what a way to go, with a reimagining of the 1987 classic, 6954 Blacktron Renegade. The original version cemented Blacktron’s Bad boy image by its blatant disregard for the symmetrical spaceship design that was the norm in LEGO Space to that date. The new one doubles down and embraces the legacy of the first iteration of Blacktron.

The set will be released on January 1 2025, and comes with 3 minifigures, a droid and 1151 pieces. It will be priced at $AUD179.99/USD99.99/€99.99/£89.99
At the Fan Media Days, Senior Designer Jae Won Lee unveiled a craft in predominantly black and yellow, with a little transparent red. Here was the 10355 Blacktron Renegade – reimagined at around 1.5 times its original size. And a B-Model… more on that later.

Make it with Modules
Jae revealed the Model, and demonstrated that like the original model from 1987, this version has 6 modules: the cabin (which now seats 2), a communications array and two thrusters, as well as a buggy – a much larger rover than that seen previously: this one has a cabin, as well as room for a gunner positioned in the rear. There are also two small, one-man speeders attached to the wings, disguised by a brick-built Blacktron symbol!
The modules in the original model were attached using Technic Pins, while it would appear that these are using Clips and bars – which has the advantage of not needing to have the joining components perfectly square on.

Will these modules be instantly compatible with the Blacktron Cruiser GWP from early 2023? Time will tell: I will take a direct look at that when I review the set in the near future.
Minifigures
Along with 3 Blacktron figures, there is a droid. In this case, it is a “blacktronified” version of the 6592 Solar Powered Transporter service robot. (Classic space droid image from Brickset.com)

Drop Ship
The Model features a ‘drop function’ for the rover, along with retractable landing gear. In the original Renegade, the rover was much smaller, and deployed within a garage module. I have to admit, I think this one is a bit cooler!

B Model
Finally, the model features a B Model: a Mech, and updated model based on 6876 Alienator. Unfortunately, it cannot be built at the same time as the primary model. I suspect I shall be picking up another copy of this set after its release! If only because my review copy arrived with a sizable dent thanks do some water damage and high impact during shipping. Like the B- Model instructions for the 10497 Galaxy Explorer, the Alienator/Mech instructions will be included through the LEGO Build App.

I look forward to bringing my review to you before too long.
I am quite excited for this set! The modular format for the model allows different parts to be mixed and matched, while maintaining the nostalgic vibe. I expect this also means that the revised Blacktron Torsos, which were available for a short while in 2022 might return later this year to pick and build, bringing joy to army builders every where.

I don’t have a copy of the original Renegade to hand at present.
Here is a copy that I put together in Bricklink Studio this evening…
