
The LEGO Botanical Collection continues to grow. The Golden Pothos be released on august the first, and we were fortunate to have the LEGO Group send a copy over ahead of its release. The Golden Pothos, also known as Devils Ivy is a native of French Polynesia and is now found in south east Asia, South Africa and Australia. It is easy to grow in low light, and minimal care, making it a popular houseplant. So, how does a model of a low maintenance houseplant translate into LEGO form?
The set has 372 parts and has a recommended retail price of $99.99AUD / £54.99 /$USD59.99 / 59.99€. Is it worth the investment?
Inside the Box
The box contains four bags of elements, and an instruction manual. The first two bags contain elements for the stand and pot, while bags three and four contain the green elements for the vines and leaves.


Let’s examine the elements
We have a collection of reddish brown round bricks and tiles, as well as some plates with the stud quadrant cutout.We have four 8x8x2 quarter circle curved slopes. But, for myself, the most intriguing element here is the quarter circular 6×6 cheese slope: this is the latest of elements that will sit happily next to the venerable cheese which first appeared 22 years ago, but has been expanded on over the past few months: this element has been seen in grey and black earlier in the year – but this is the first appearance in white.. The curves of the sides of the pot are 2x3x1 curved slopes.


Moving to the bags of greenery, we see 40 of the male-female click hinge elements (the variant with the hole in the middle) inbright green green as well as some bright green horn/tail elements. Finally, we have some 36 green leaves AND 12 of the new dual-coloured leaf, going from green to lime.




Building the Pot
We begin the build with a reddish brown stand for the pot. The dome forms the base of the bot, and sits securely in place.


The walls of the pot are spaced by the black internal braces. The gaps between these vertical panels are filled in with units mare of curved slopes, held together with plates containing technic stud connectors.The ‘cheese curve’ sits around the top of the pot nicely. Then we add in some plates, supported on the strengthening struts. Thes plates build up like a mound of dirt, and plates with vertical rods serve as mounting points for technic connectors at the base of the stems.





We move onto the stems. We start with some young stems in the middle of the ‘soil’ – curved bars with clips and leaves attached. The multicoloured variegated green-lime green bring spring out of the stems.
The Vines

From here, the instructions give us a couple of options for how we construct the the vines. One has alternating long and short, so that some can hang down over the edge of a raised shelf . The other option presents us with vines of similar lengths, perhaps more sensible for placing in the middle of a table.
There is due care an attention paid to the size of the stems attached to the leaves – longer close to the base of the stem, moving through the green ‘handlebar’ – originally seen in last year’s formula one collectable vehicles and finally the 2 module connector bar with stop ring in bright green. Along the way, some bright green horns form the aerial roots.






I was surprised that there was no clear sequencing used in placing these stems: other botanical sets have gone out of their way to have you build the new growth ahead of the old – placing the stems of the younger growth and leaves before those of the older, more established growth. Not a complaint on my part, more just a surprise, as the botanical designers generally endeavour to work as much story telling into the build as possible. On the other hand, I am grateful that this saved us six to eight additional pages in the manual.
That said, it is easy to mould the vines into appropriate forms – be they trailing across a table, or hanging off the edge of a bench or shelf.


I have seen these plants often growing on a shelf, with one solitary longer vine, and others kept short. I may have taken this option.

My thoughts
The final model gives us a lovely version of the Golden Pothos. The pot construction was refreshing for me, and I appreciate the way that it locks into the stand. The graduated detail on the vines, and the occasional variegated leaf give a realistic appearance.
The shape of the leaf/petal works well in its role, and the multicoloured leaves break the monotony of the colouring.

Normally, when putting together botanical sets, I get distracted by spinning the flowers as miniature tops, during the building process. This was missing during the construction of this set, but also fair, given that there are no round hubbed flowers involved in this model.
That said, I found sufficient distraction and playfulness in the chance to adjust the shapes of the vines
Overall, I enjoyed the build, but I feel its true strength lies in the potential versatility of the elements.
The bright green hinges, bars and horns make for some great elements for your own botanical projects, and the new variegated leaf is an awesome addition.
However, if you apply the test of cost versus a similar real plant, the set is let down significantly. The Bunch of Red or Pink Roses is priced at $AUD99.99; an actual dozen roses in Melbourne currently sells for any where from $AUD75 to $AUD150. This 11512LEGO Botanicals Hanging Golden Pothos, with only 372 pieces, is priced at a similar level. to the bunch of a dozen roses, with a RRP of $AUD99.99 / $USD59.99/£54.99 / €59.99. While this is a familiar price to Australian customers, it will probably feel a bit overpriced to those in Europe and the UK. This disparity is even more obvious when you compare it with the price of the actual plant: I can pick one up at our local garden centre for around $AUD15-30. With little maintenance required, this is another situation where the real thing is significantly less expensive than the LEGO Equivalent.
It’s hard to recommend this set at this price, for the plant alone, although I find it quite appealing as a parts pack. I enjoyed the build and the final product, but I can’t give it more than three point five arbitrary praise units out of five with its current pricing. In Australia, some of out department stores routinely sell Botanicals in this price range for closer to $AUD79.99 – and this feels a more reasonable price, so long as it is not a LEGO Store exclusive.

Golden Pothos is toxic to pets, so a Lego replacement is nice for pet owners. However, a nice fake Golden Pothos can be purchased at any big box store for a third of the price of the Lego set. I will probably buy the Lego set, but watch for a sale.
