In which we look at the figures in the build a ministations, compare theme with their existing counterparts and speculate over the next colour of spaceman torso. I think the clues are all there…
While LEGO® Dreamzzz sets focus mainly on the Dream World, a significant part of the action takes place in the waking world: the schoolyard, the kids’ homes and other locations around LEGO Brooklyn. It has been a little frustrating, being unable to get the right minifigures for these settings, until now…
If you have shared my pain, rejoice: this month, a collection of DREAMZZz characters have arrived in the Build-a-mini stations at LEGO branded retail stores. While a lot of fuss has been made of the arrival of a Dark Blue classic space torso (and rightly so) there is a lot to be said for the other figures too.
Let’s take a look at the new figures, in combination with versions of these figures as they currently exist in the sets. Many of the main characters also exist as evil doppelgangers – so, let’s line up the figure variants that I’ve looked at so far.
Mateo
Let’s start with Mateo. In the new waking world figure, he is wearing a medium azure windcheater, with beautifully detailed pockets and creases. One arm is a darker shade – like the first wave figure (right). His leg print is the same as that with the first wave legs – grey jeans, with red basketball boots. The BAM station also includes Z-Blob as an accessory, although you can also find a blue puffer jacket. This puffer also comes with the August releases -71485 Mateo and Z-Blob The Knight Battle and the 71478 The Never Witch’s Midnight Raven.
In 71486 Castle Nocturnia, Mateo wears an armoured pauldron. The August 20424 sets have him in a white shirt with a flannel overshirt, featuring a couple of Night bureau insignia, while he has olive green chinos with white trainers. His legs also feature side printing. This is the form that Madteo is based on.

Madteo is a corrupted form of Mateo – purple and black, with a demonic face on his shirt and a dark stone grey puffer jacket. I love the skull motif on the belt buckle.
As an observation, there are 3 distinct variations of Mateo’s dreadlocked hair in reddish brown: the first wave had 2 lines of bright green paint in his hair, but only one in the recent sets (his new face also featured a blob of Z-blob goo on his face. The waking world hair has two thin, squiggly lines of tan on the right-hand side.

Izzie
Mateos sister, Izzie has been one of my favourite minifigure characters of the last few years. In her BAM waking world form, she has medium azure legs and a bright light orange torso with white arms. There is a picture of her favourite anime character, Bunchu Bunny, poking through, and on the back, some white straps to tie up. She has a plush Bunchu. You can see that there have been changes between the first (far right)and second season figures (second from the right)
Dizzie’s design is a black/violet /pale yellow corruption of the first season design, based on her armour pattern.

Zoey
Zoey has always been a little enigmatic, but I really love her real-world form—the grey jacket over the striped lavender and nave top, with an owl-like pendant matching the print on the rear of the jacket. The line work is immaculate, and it will certainly be a stunning torso for any fashionable, brooding teenager around town. Her sand blue jeans have fine stitching detail around the front. There is a dark grey cat in the selection for her, too.
The original Zoey Figure (right) featured feathers and dream catcher inspired designs, while the most recent version (2nd from left) looks far more like a Night Bureau uniform. The colours are bolder and brighter this season as she becomes a far more determined character. Doey the doppelganger is again derived from the season one figure. They all share a terrific hairstyle, which finally appears in a more realistic black colour rather than the dream-inspired magenta or violet.

Mr Oz
Finally, we come to Mr Oswald/Doctor Oz. The initial publicity images showed him wearing a jumper with a Classic Space logo underneath the brown jacket. However, when this figure debuted in Mr Oz’s Space Bus, he featured a Night Bureau hourglass in the centre of his torso in its stead. All forms of Dr Oz feature silvered ink for his beard and moustache, but this is the first one to feature a dual-sided head print, to say nothing about regular glasses. No doubt, this torso has been in high demand.
Now, we just have to wait for a Classic air tank and Space helmet in Dark Blue. A motorcycle helmet in dark blue was released in the early 2000s as part of Knights Kingdom2. This element has seen a degree of appreciation on the secondary market recently. Hopefully, an appropriate helmet will crop up in sets next year.
Now that we know what we know, I am disappointed that 71479 Zoey’s Cat Motorcycle set did not feature a helmet for Zoey in dark blue—even a motorcycle helmet would have been acceptable for even the most die-hard space fan, given what we now know about Mr Oswald’s torso. Even more so, given that we see Zoey wearing a helmet on screen. The C-Rex also features a motorcycle for Zoey as a side-build, and it would have been another opportunity.

Cooper
The Cooper figure on the BAM station in the second from the left. This is the same figure seen in 71455 Grimkeeper the Cage Monster – and represents Cooper’s clothes while he slept in the series’ early episodes.

Recurring Dream(er)s
While Cooper has been well represented over the years, Jayden and Nova have both appeared as they did in last year’s sets: Jayden(71453,40657,71458) and Nova(71457 and 71469). Jayden has lavender unicorn pyjamas, while Nova has a sleeping sloth on hers. Jayden is wearing an orthodontic retainer. This headgear is typically worn at night. He has black hair with an undercut, while Nova has dark red hair, with bangs swept forward.

Reflection
Towards the end of 2023, thanks to the LEGO Ambassadors network, I had an opportunity to chat with members of the LEGO DREAMZZz Team about the February 2024 selection of sets.
I asked about the early appearance of Mr Oz in early publicity material, where we saw him in his Dark Blue space jumper. The designers explained that it didn’t manifest in the figures because it was part of his clothes in the ‘waking world.’ They went on to talk about the way the Dream World has been the focus of sets in the theme, but it might be cool to incorporate aspects of the waking world into available products. And so here we are… I won’t claim credit for this. Designers can never specifically talk about upcoming releases until they are made public, so it may well have been on the cards at that time.
Blatant Speculation: The Next Spaceman?
Crazy Fan Theory follows: We were initially teased with the dark blue torso, before the release of the series. This was confirmed in his first appearance in Season one, episode 1. And Now, via BAM, it has manifested.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that the upcoming LEGO Ideas Minifigure Prize Machine will include a new colour for the minifigure. Options included Bright Bluish Green (teal), Dark Azure, Bright yellowish Green (lime), Warm gold, and reddish violet. The result of the Fan Vote has never been revealed.

In the closing moments of the final episode of Season 2, Mr Oz is seen wearing a decidely blueish-green Classic Space Logo jumper. Is this a clue as to the next Classic space torso to be released? I suppose we will have to wait until next year to find out.

[Edit: could that just be the lighting? Its a nice warm, golden hour kind of glow there.] I applied the white balance to the labcoat and did the same to an image in the school building. And it lands smack bang in the middle of my vision where I cannot quite tell the difference between Azure and Teal. Certainly don’t think I can say that these jumpers are the same colour.]

I am excited to have these new minifigures: I feel they all have a fun role to play in potential DREAMZZz MOCs and Toy photography.
To say nothing of the appearance of a new Classic Space Torso for those who wish to catch ’em all! I do feel there was a chance to renew the dark blue space helmet or even motorcycle helmet in the recent wave of DREAMZZZ sets, but hopefully it might manifest, along with airtanks, in 2025. That said, it’s not all about the space torso. For me, all of the waking world figures are a highlight.
Have You found your dark blue Space torso yet? Am I reading too much into the hint at the end of the series? Is it Bright bluish-green or Dark Azure? Or is my colour blindness playing up, and it is still Dark Blue? You must get to the end of episode 20 of season 2 to find it. Leave your comments below.
