The AFOL’s Guide to Overwatch #6: Watchpoint Gibraltar 75975

In which I reach the end of my survey of the (first wave of?) LEGO® Overwatch sets, find a gigantic gorilla in an armoured space suit, build a shuttle and gantry, discover an interesting property of some dark red elements and return to the ancient history of the LEGO Group as I ask the question “Why does the colour seem a bit off here?” Do you want to know more? Read on.

Let me tell you a story. When I began reviewing the Overwatch sets, I knew nothing of the game, and nothing of the lore. I still know virtually nothing about playing the game, BUT I have come to meet a number of the characters along the way, and appreciate the Lore behind them all. We have seen a number of sets so far: Tracer vs Widowmaker 75070 ; Hanzo vs Genji 75071; Dorado Showdown 75972; Rheinhart and D.va 75973 and most recently Bastion 75974. There is one set left to review: 75975: Watchpoint Gibraltar. This is the largest of the Overwatch sets, featuring a large shuttle launch vehicle, a rocket gantry/launch pad three minifigures and an oversized Gorilla wearing reading glasses.

I asked Harry, the game playing teenager in our house to explain why all these things would want to be put together in a single set, and why we should care?

An AFOLs Guide to Overwatch #5: Bastion [Review 75974]

In which I seek further advice from the game playing teenager around the house for a backstory, try my hand at knolling- only to fail, and then take every Overwatch player’s favorite Omnic out into the garden…

Over the last few weeks, we have been looking over the new line LEGO® sets based on the video game Overwatch. I have not spent a lot of time engaging with the franchise previously, so I have had my son Harry providing some commentary on the back story behind the characters. Hopefully, this will help AFOLs who are unfamiliar with the back story to feel more aware of the underlying backstory, and nature of the characters depicted in the sets.

Today, I am going to look at set 75974 Bastion. This is not the first time that we have encountered this robot, searching for meaning: we previously saw a smaller version, with a different skin late last year – that set – Omnic Crisis Bastion is exclusively available through the Blizzard online store, and can be found here.

An AFOL’s Guide to Overwatch #4 Reinhardt and D.Va [75973]

So far we have looked at the three smallest Overwatch sets- Tracer vs Widowmaker; Hanzo vs Genji and Dorado Showdown. Today’s set does not appear to be loaded with the intrinsic antagonism that the three previously reviewed playsets were. From what I can gather from Harry, the Gamer in our house, these two characters do not have an intrinsic rivalry, but rather exist independently of each other in Overwatch Lore. There is a linking thread however: Both characters are Mech Pilots.

An AFOL’s Guide to Overwatch #3 [75972 Dorado Showdown]

In our third review of LEGO Overwatch sets, we enter a new environment: the Dorado Map. As I have previously discussed, while looking at Tracer vs WidowMaker as well as Hanzo vs Genji, I have not played much Overwatch, and so I have turned to my teenage son for information about the characters as well as the nature of the gameplay, and how they might relate to the LEGO Sets. Today, we world of the neo-wild west, where we meet Reaper, Soldier: 76 and McCree.

We will look at the minifigures, the builds, compare these with reference artwork, and see if the build has anything to offer the AFOL who is not an overwatch fan.

The AFOLs Guide to Overwatch #2[75971 Hanzo vs. Genji]

It’s been a busy time of year! Recently, we looked at the smallest of the new LEGO®sets in the new Overwatch theme: Tracer Vs. Widowmaker. I was not up on the lore behind the story, so I invited my son Harry to provide some background commentary, to help bring me up to speed.  If you are trying to understand the underlying stories, it might help you too. As we continue to explore the world of Overwatch, in the context of the soon to be released LEGO sets, today I am taking a look at the the second set, 75971 Hanzo vs Genji. Hopefully, Harry is able to help all of us…

With 197 pieces, and costing $AUD39.99, this is a relatively expensive set, with elements costing roughly 20 cents each.  We will continue look at the value of these sets as we move along through the range.

An AFOL’s Guide to Overwatch I: Tracer vs. Widowmaker [75970]

When it was recently announced that we were getting a  forthcoming range of LEGO® sets based on the Overwatch Video Game, I was a little intrigued. A game that I perceived as a shooter becoming a licensed line of LEGO sets? While it may not be entirely my thing, it is a game that has occupied many of my son’s off hours over the last year or so. I thought “Terrific – a chance for us to bond and for me to get to understand this thing a bit better.”

As a newcomer to the world of Overwatch, I found myself confronted with a wide variety of what appeared to be confusing information. I am an AFOL, not an Overwatch Player; and it is from that perspective that I write.  I have asked my son, Harry, to provide some commentary on the game and characters, so that we might better understand the sets that are available.
