Great Scott! The Delorean Time Machine gets the LEGO Speed Champions Treatment!

A LEGO Speed Champions model of the Delorean Time Machine from Back to the Future, featuring two minifigures inside, with electric sparks in the background and promotional text indicating its release in 2026.

Let your mind drift back to the past. To a time when things were much simpler. Take yourself back to 2013. The Time Machine from Back to the Future was the fourth set to be released through the relatively new LEGO Cusoo program. With 401 pieces and two minifigures, it was the only set released through what would become ‘LEGO Ideas’ that year. The set was on the market for around 18 months. And it was gone.

Now, if you grew up in the 80s and 90s, Back to the Future is one of our cultural touch stones (even if the movie’s initial release date is now further back than the time jump that Marty McFly experienced in that first movie). The Time machine has been revisited in LEGO Dimensions as well as the more recent ICONs set – the earlier models are long discontinued, and the ICONS version takes up just a little too much space on a shelf.

If only we had some sort of time machine that would allow us to bring back a conveniently sized model at a sensible price. One that you would happily share with your kids.

Today, the LEGO Group have revealed the 77256 Speed Champions ‘Time Machine from Back to the Future.’ The set has 357 pieces and two minifigures. It will be priced at $AUD39.99/ $USD27.99/ 27.99€ / £22.99 and will be available on January 1 2026.

The model can be displayed as either the original ‘car version’ or the ‘Where we are going, we don’t need roads’ Mr Fusion powered flying car. As such, if it appeals, you will probably need two! However, while we have the hovercar’s barcode numberplate, I am uncertain from the images provided whether we will also see a return of the ‘Outatime’ plate of the original vehicle.

Here’s the product description:

LEGO® Speed Champions Time Machine from Back to the Future (77256) model car kit lets kids aged 9 and over build, display and recreate action from the iconic movie franchise. This brick-built toy car includes many of the famous details from the model seen in the popular movies. Build this iconic car with a lightning rod and California number plate from the first movie before rebuilding it into its flying version from the second movie with Mr. Fusion, an orange number plate and sideways wheels. Both versions have rear air vents, a cockpit, the flux capacitor and time calculator. For added play value, the playset also comes with 2 minifigure characters from the movies: Doc Brown and Marty McFly to place inside the cockpit. A great gift for kids and nostalgic adults, they can build each playset with confidence using the LEGO Builder app, which lets them zoom, rotate in 3D and track progress with easy-to-follow digital instructions. Set contains 357 pieces.

This year (2025) is the 40th anniversary of the original film’s release, making it a truly trans-generational property. As such, I am a little disappointed at the need to wait for the new year! But, the set is relatively affordable, and brings us over 10 years of evolution in building techniques from the original Cuusoo version.

The model appears to feature some prints on transparent blue tiles, as well as the obligatory stickers for the headlights and grille, while the rear tail lights involve an intricate collection of SNOTted transparent elements.

Speed Champions Movie Cars: they are a thing!

Speed Champions scale Movie cars are becoming a subtheme of their own, starting with Steve McQueen’s 1968 Mustang Fastback from Bullitt (It may not have been licensed as such, but many recognised the truth, if only you left the stickers off) before moving on to between the Bond Aston Martin; The Fast and The Furious franchise and the upcoming Lightning McQueen, which would appear to push the envelope with regards to just how real a Speed Champions model needs to be these days.

We have also recently seen 3 Batmobile variants revealed for release next March (each unlocking Golden variants to play in the upcoming LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight), featuring the versions from Batman and Robin; Batman V. Superman as well as The Batman.

Certainly, 2026 is shaping up to be a great year for movie cars. Will we see the Ecto 1 return to minifigure scale through Speed Champions too? I am curious to see. Are there any other movie cars that you would like to see enter the range in 2026? Leave your comments below.
