I really appreciate the level of detail that this model goes into: the castle was built in the foothills of the Alps in southern Bavaria, at the request of King Ludwig II. Construction started in 1869. Drawing on romanticism’s architectural excesses, it was based, in part , on King Ludwig’s idealized version of a German Knight’s castle. He also drew inspiration from the operas of Richard Wagner while considering the design. However, there were some surprises to be found, looking through the press pack:

One thing that has surprised me in the product images is the presence of splits in the bases of some of the headlamp bricks. While this has been an issue in many of the 1×1 bricks in my collection, I was amazed to see them depicted in actual production images. We saw the new white pigment rolled out in the revamped Trevi Fountain this year, and I wonder if this is used in this set? (And were these pictures taken before the rollout of the new pigment?) Time will tell, when we see the reviews roll around. I am suspicious that the new pigment might be more robust than the previous one in use, and it would be great if we see some practical advantages to it.
When these elements become integral to the construction of a major release in the Architecture calendar, it is disappointing to see these problems almost highlighted. Less so if it is a smaller set, but $400AUD is a significant price to pay, and if there is such an ongoing quality issue, we should expect to see it addressed.
That said, there is a lot we don’t know about this issue at present. Hopefully we shall have some more information about these elements/new white soon, and we can be reassured, or otherwise…

21063 Neuschwanstein Castle is now available to preorder in some markets before going on sale on August 1 2025. The set has 3455 pieces, and priced at $AUD399.99/ $USD279.99 / 269,99 € / £239.99. Some of these elements are redundant, due to the choice between autumnal and springtime/summer foliage.
