40767 Up-Scaled Space Baby: A good reason to order fresh LEGO?

A large red LEGO Space Baby figure stands next to smaller pink and blue LEGO minifigures, with a text overlay asking if it's a good reason to buy LEGO.

After weeks of rumor and innuendo, the 40676 Scaled Up Baby Astranaut is going live as a gift with purchase on May 15th, with a purchase threshold of $USD150/€150/Aud 245

A group of LEGO minifigures including an adult astronaut with a communication device, a blue space baby, a pink space baby, and a female astronaut holding a tool, all displayed on a black base.

Space Babies have been a cause of some excitement over the last couple of years – appearing in 2023’s Series 24 minifigures (blue) and series 26 Minifigures (pink) with responsible adults, and also incorporated in to the 31142 Creator 3in1 Space Roller Coaster. While a white figure has appeared in miniature, it maintains a Classic Smiley face, while the babies have additional cuteness added. Will this cuteness survive the transition to a brick built model approximately 6x the size in most directions?

This set has 250 pieces, many of which are red, with all manner of plates, tiles and curved slopes. The highlight for many will be the red, 2×4 tile with the Classic Space logo printed on.

Looking through the collection of other colours we see white, blue, black, yellow, purple green, orange, reddish brown, bright reddish violet and teal. All but one of these colours has previously appeared on a classic space torso… just saying.

If only I had the rest of the elements to construct a full-sized red space minifigure. The irony is not lost on me… Space babies at the traditional scale have not yet been released in red. Hopfully we might see one before too long.

Building Experience:

The build involves a generous amount of SNOT work – starting at the feet, with an ingenious mashing together of tiles in opposite directions.

We build upwards, gradually tapering as we go – the legs & hips are 6 studs wide, while the torso is 4 and 2 plates – very similar to and Brick Headz set, although we built the arms up with the aid of curved slopes. I love the way that this part of the build incorporates the colours of the original classic spacemen: red, white, blue and yellow! (Black seems to ave been left behind.)

The head is functionally 5 studs wide, while the helmet adds an extra 2 studs of width after completion

The final result is quite adorable!

Here it is, compared to the puny 1/6 size space babies. I love the way the oxygen tanks are built up, using a combination of curved slopes.

Suffice to say, this model is an interesting, but not too complicated build. There are no stickers – that face and Space Logo are all printed.

And it is so dang’d cute!

Here are the space babies, and their care givers…

If you have the collection of scaled up minifigures, there is no doubt that this is a set you don’t want to miss.

The offer goes live (or went live) at midnight/early hours of the 15th of may, and will continue until the 23rd. The threshold is $USD/€ 150, and $245AUD.
