The latest LEGO ICONS set, 10360 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, brings us the modified 747-100 and the prototype Space Shuttle Enterprise. The defining point of all LEGO Spacecraft and Airplanes is their swooshability. While this set is intended as a display model, my inner eight-year-old felt it should be taken out for a fly.
While I am still writing up my full review, I felt it important to share this with you now. You can see the results after the break.
This 2417 Piece set demonstrates the SCA N905NA – a modified 747-100 – and the shuttle orbiter Enterprise as they were displayed at the Paris Airshow in 1983.
With a wingspan of 53cm, and 63 cm long, I had to take it outside to test!
The shuttle attached to the jumbo using 3 trailer hitches and the combination, although heavy, feels secure and sturdy in my hand as we test it out.
The Jumbo is a masterwork in geometry, with the wings sweptback at 45º. A new landing gear element, capable of holding four wheels is also included. Tucked away inside the fuselage is a Technic mechanism to allow the landing gear to be retracted and deployed. All of the windows are printed, as is the nose cone.
The Shuttle is light, with angled plates forming the classic outline. There have been over 20 models of Space shuttle orbiters of this scale or larger, and this is the first time that Enterprise has been shown. It can be transported with the tail cone reducing drag from the inactive engines, or easily rearranged to fly independently, with jet cones and landing gear. It is easy to swoosh with either an underhand or overhand grip.
The landing gear on the shuttle is fine for a landing on a firm surface.
