Is LEGO® Creator 3in1 31152 Space Astronaut Compatible with the LEGO® Technic 42182 Lunar Rover?

[Words: Ramblingbrick; Pictures: BrankoTheFather] Since we posted Branko’s review of the Lunar Rover a couple of days ago, I have been asked several questions, including “What is the Scale?” and “Will the 31152 Creator 3in1 Astronaut fit in it?” Branko didn’t really address this in his original review, so today, we thought we should take a closer look.

Scaling

According to the NASA Space Science Data Coordinated Archive, the frame of the Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle was 3.1 meters long with a wheelbase of 2.3 meters. The maximum height was 1.14 meters. According to LEGO.com, the 42182 measures over 14 cm high,38 cm long and 25 cm wide. The wheelbase measures 27 cm. Scaling-wise, – it is close to 1:8 – Technically, 1:8.2 in length, 1:8.1 in height and 1:8.5 in the wheelbase. So… A little over 1:8

The Creator 3in1 31152 Space Astronaut is around 27cm tall. NASA’s public archives are a little vague on the actual height of individual astronauts, but there is a suggestion that it ranges between 5’9″ (175cm) – and 6’2″ (187) . Given that the helmet seems to leave a few more centimetres of clearance above the head, let’s presume approximately 7cm at the apex of the helmet. So, scaling for the tallest of astronauts, at around 1.94 m in the spacesuit, the 27 cm astronaut would scale to 1:7.18.

So: depending on the individual astronauts involved the Creator set is scaled at around 1:6.8 – 1:7.2, which is a little larger than the scale of the Lunar Rover.

Assemble the Rover

That said, Branko had a copy of 31152 at hand, courtesy of a bout of Western Consumerism earlier in the year. After a few deft clicks, it was assembled and ready to pose with the Lunar Rover. Of course, it had to be deployed first!

Going out on the road

Having assembled the moon rover, the astronaut can go out for a drive…This is probably where we find the subtle discrepancy in scales most obvious.

He is just a little oversized in this seat. the knees need to come up a little too high, and he is at danger of manspreading…

Exploring the Option

And so we start collecting rock specimens and chipping away

As we get on with a little exploration, we come across some hitherto undiscovered life forms…

Hopefully, this answers your question.

The 42182 LEGO Technic Apollo Lunar Rover Vehicle will be released on August 1, 2024. The recommended retail price is $AUD349.99/£189.99/US$219.99/€219.99.

The 31152 LEGO Creator 3in1 Space Astronaut was released earlier in the year, and its recommended retail price is $AUD89.99/$USD54.99/€49.99/£44.99. That said, you may find it cheaper.

I appreciate that the Space Astronaut 3in1 is a little oversized for use with the LRV model, BUT it still adds quite a bit of life to the model, especially when manipulating the associated scientific equipment.
