There are plenty of LEGO® sets that have been released over the past couple of years that have given builders the chance to put together some brick built flowers, but otherwise not formally labelled as being part of the Botanical Series.
The 40863 Flower Trellis Display is a novel set, bringing us some colourful flowers growing on a vertical trellis. It is a substantial build that brings a pleasing , unique floral model, arriving just in time for Mothers’ Day in May ( in Australia at least – other geographies might vary.) It is scheduled to be available April 1 – 16, with a purchase threshold from LEGO.com of: 150 EUR/ 150 USD/ 135 GBP/ 240 AUD.
Interested? Let’s take a closer look. This set was provided by the LEGO Group: All opinions are my own.
The Elements:

The set comes in a medium sized purple/lavender box, containing 4 bags of pieces, along with four 8×8 grilled plates.Unlike other sets that we have looked at lately, this is a fairly colourful affair – sure, we have quite a few earth tones, especially in bow/curved slopes, along with a few brackets. Dark Tan and Dark Orange are present in abundance, while there are a few white elements beyond my scope of recognition I expect they appeared in a few DOTS sets while I wasn’t looking. We have Technic connectors in a variety of shades of Green along with small leaves, as well as a few that escaped from Donkey Kong’s universe.
I am intrigued by the number of brackets present, as well as the multiple shades of yellow to be seen.
Elements that are relatively new to me include the 3×3 corner plate, as well as the bright yellow ‘ Sonic Ring”; The ‘Y’ Plates are dark brown.

The Build
We start off with multiple elements being turned around by others, and what appears to be the base of the display. Externally, it is wrapped up in brackets, as well as curved slopes.I appreciate the way that rows of brown studs appear where we might expect soil below the plants.

having built up the base, we proceed with the back board of the build: we start with the eponymous trellis Ther use the grille plates, and stick them together using plies and lates front and back. From here, we start to add the creeper finding its way upwards, above the trellis, taking advantage of the green technic connectors. We place technic connector/studs into may of the pins to allow us to mount leaves on the vines, along with small blue flowers.

We add some flowers on the lower left, looking a little like tiny eggs
From here, we start to build up the rest of the flowers: a large cool yellow , broad petalled flower -, with some nifty yellow curved sloped 1×2 wedge elements

The purple flowers start with a 2×2 round plate with a single stud in the middle. On this is a 1x1x2/3 rounded plate, with a stud on the side. a tig elements holds the Sonic the Hedgehog rings in place around this assemble, while petals are attached to the ring. Another 2×2 round plate holds it in place. the only problem with technique is the way that these flowers look like they have a sizeable gap where a petal ought to be.

And this brings us the final product: I have to admit, I quite like it. enough to nail it to the wall? I’d not sure.

Like last year’s 40588 Flowerpot, this is an anaesthetically pleasing set with some colourful flowers ready to decorate your house. The colours really pop. I love the novel presentation, as will as the overall form of the flowers. I was a little disappointed that we were not given any insight into the nature of the flowers incorporated in the build. I have alreadyt mentioned the clever technique used to build the purple daisies, but the mising petal does stand out!
This is a step above the lower end flower sets available in the LEGO range, which are typically around 20AUD, but also significantly less than the $AUD100 roses/wildflowers etc. This set could sit in that perfect price point – around $50AUD if not for the fact that its trapped behind a paywall.
That said, if you have been holding back on the Medieval Town Square, or waiting for the Dungeons and Dragon’s set, you will easily reach the purchase threshold required for this set. And if you pick up the D&D set early, you might also be able to get the ‘Mimic’ dice box. thrown in too, great if you are looking to stack GWPs.
This GWP will be available from April 1-April 16 2024, with a threshold of $AUD240; $USD150; £135; €150
I’m not going to lie: personally, I think this is a pretty high paywall to clear, But I reckon it is pretty easy to reach the triggering threshold. Of course, after picking up the Medieval Town Square or Dungeons and Dragons set, what better gift for anyone who might be concerned about the amount of medieval fantast taking over the house than flowers?
There are other sets being released in April, including the76271 Batman Animated artwork; 60439 Space Science Lab, and the 42602 LEGO Friends Space Research Rover.
April is a relatively quiet month, compared with some of the recent onslaughts we have faced, so it will be an opportunity to take a quiet moment to think about what you might wish to pick up.
That said, I’d love to hear your thoughts: Is this set enough to send you shopping in the first few weeks of April 2024? Does this set entice you at all? Why not leave your comments below.

I will definitely get this. I’ve been delaying some high priced purchases for something like this, which will be something my daughter will love because she collects all LEGO things botanical, so this seems like a good time to get either the Mercedes W14, Medieval Town Square, or the D&D set.
