Minifigures On Parade (MOPs) Three years On: Updating our collaborative build standard.

Time flies when you are having fun. Or have a lot going on around you. Or…and so on. I can’t believe it is over 3 years since I published my original description of MOPs – Minifigures on Parade/ Minifigures on Patrol – back in July 2022. MOPs is a modular platform for community participation. I initially proposed an 8×16 plate, on a standardized base, including a raised ‘middle 8’ plate. Advantages of the format include the capacity to start simple, and build up, as well as the scope for storytelling within the space available.

The Longest LEGO Dragon Appears in Sydney.

Last Weekend, our Sydney correspondent Branko took a trip to Haymarket where LEGO Australia were in the process of engaging members of the public to build the world’s longest LEGO Dragon. The head and tail were already built, but the forms of the dragon’s body needed to be covered in scales, and so visitors were offered an 8×8 plate to fill and place on the dragon.

“Last weekend anyone could come to Haymarket to decorate the world’s longest LEGO Dragon. The dragon wound itself through the pavement like a sea serpent with two parts of its back rising out of the floor to be decorated on the sides. Anyone could drop by to decorate a 8×8 plate with Dots and place on the side of the dragon. Staff were cheerful and happy to have a chat, children and adults alike were deeply focused on building their contribution. The dragon was about 20m long (nose to tail) but the majority of the body was hidden under the pavement.”

Introducing Minifigures On Parade: a modular minifigure diorama format

It’s the LEGO Group’s 90th anniversary, and I think it is time we hold a parade. Get our minifigures out onto the streets, or the paths and roadways, and bring them together. But how?

In the past, I have based building challenges on an 8x8x8 Minifigure Habitat standard. This format has taken on a life of its own, with regular challenges run on instagram by @brickfambuilds, while others such as @cazmockett and @troublesbricking have worked on series of habitats using monochromatic minifigures.

While the habitat format is great for creating a space for a single mini figure, it is less easy to fit 2 or more minifigures into the format.
