It was the late 1970’s, and Saturday afternoons on commercial TV in Melbourne brought us a selection of science fiction series from the 1960s: Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Land of the Giants, The Time Tunnel and Star Trek. They all offered action, excitement and real wild things, but only one of them took us off Earth, and into the wider Galaxy: Star Trek. Gene Roddenberry’s original series has spawned many spin-offs, sequel series and movies – in multiple timelines.
Last year, the LEGO Group finally got access to licensed Star Trek material, and we saw the debut of the NCC-1701-D – the Federation Flagship from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
This year, as the franchise celebrates its 60th anniversary, we take a leap back to the Bridge of the Enterprise, with the crew from that original series.
LEGO® Icons 11385 Star Trek: U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701™ Bridge has eight minifigures, and four tribbles,. With 1701 Pieces (yes, you read that right), this set will be available from September 1, and is available to preorder from LEGO.com today. It’s recommended retail price is $AUD299.99 /£159.99 / €179.99 / $USD199.99. This release coincides nicely with the 60th Anniversary of the the release of the first episode in September, 1966.
The ship may have rattled and shaken every time it was hit by with the slightest disturbace, and appeared to have been fashioned out of carboard boxes with added lights, but it set the standard for television spaceships of the era. Indeed, in this set, the captain’s chair rocks from side to side!

Today, the LEGO Group, in partnership with Paramount Products & Experiences, unveils the LEGO® Icons Star Trek: U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701™ Bridge (11385), a 1,701-piece building set for adult fans. The model recreates two of the most recognisable locations from the original series Star Trek – the bridge and transporter room of the U.S.S. Enterprise™.
Following the debut of the first ever LEGO Star Trek™ set, which recreated the iconic exterior of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D™ from Star Trek: The Next Generation, the highly-anticipated new LEGO Icons Star Trek: U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701™ Bridge gives fans the opportunity to step inside the legendary starship from the original series for the very first time in LEGO form, with an impressive level of detail, interactive features and an all-star Starfleet crew.
The model focuses on the ship’s iconic bridge and transporter room, featuring computer stations, a viewscreen displaying a Klingon warrior, and a transporter platform for crew deployment. Once completed, the modular sections can be arranged into a display configuration.
Several interactive features that recreate familiar on-screen moments are included. Builders can rock the captain’s chair to simulate ship turbulence and battle sequences, turn a dial to activate the transporter and move crew between pads, and use a lever to open the turbo lift doors.
Eight brand-new minifigures represent the Starfleet crew: James T. Kirk, Spock, Nyota Uhura, Hikaru Sulu, Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, Pavel Chekov, Christine Chapel and Montgomery “Scotty” Scott. It also includes four tribbles – the iconic, fluffy alien characters from Star Trek – along with accessories such as two Starfleet communicators, four phasers, Spock’s harp, two Vulcan Lirpas and a Trident Scanner. The Starfleet communicators are represented by a decorated 1×2 tile, while the phaser is an all-new LEGO element.
A digital building experience is available via the LEGO Builder app, where builders can view the model in 3D, zoom and rotate during construction, and track progress step by step.

The layout of the set is sizable and non linear. It appears to be modular, so you can shift locations around to suit your display space.
And the set comes with round, furry tribbles – admittedly, only 4 (Refer to Star Trek – Original Series S2E15 and ST: Deep Space Nine S5E6 to see why this is a grossly underepresentative number…). I wonder if they would consider making a this this printed ball available through pick a brick? If only so we can build up a realistic number of them. The set even allows them to break through the wall panels in the transporter room: I feel we need more than four in order that such a calamity to occur.
I fondly recall a scene from ST:TNG Series 6 Episode 4 – Relics, in which Original Series Enterprise Engineer Scotty is rescued from a transporter buffer, and becomes a man Out Of Time:”

I am delighted to see this set is loaded with play features and easter eggs, and is not just slated to sit on a shelf. The minifigure selection includes the core cast from the original series: Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Uhura, Sulu and Chekhov. A truly cosmopolitan crew for its time. The inclusion of Nurse Chapel attempts to even up the gender inequity – and while not appearing on screen as often as Yeoman Rand, her actor Majel Barrett-Roddenberry went on to provide the voice for a generation of Starfleet computers appearing in The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager. Further fleshing out of this character in Strange New Worlds also adds to the case for her inclusion.
I would love the torsos, phasers and tricorder tiles to become generally available through pick-a-brick, if only so we can create our own crew members.
The Household Relic from the 1970s – the Dinky toys USS Enterprise. Unfortunately, the years were not as kind to our Klingon Bird of Prey from the same era. May it rest in pieces.
Star Trek has been one of my favorite Sci Fi franchises for close to since the 70s: I probably saw my first episodes of Star Trek before I saw Star Wars. The 60th anniversary month feels like a good time to release this set. This set will be a day-one purchase for me.

Very disappointed with the Enterprise bridge–I wanted a display set. Even though the TV set was very plain, it looked a lot better than it does in the play set. Worse, the minifigs are almost unrecognizable, except for Spock and Uhura, unless you look at the accessories they’re holding. I was a huge Star Trek fan, and watched all the original episodes when they were aired on national TV, so I fully intended to buy this. Sorry, but it’s not for me at $200.
