My kids were born in the early days of the 21st century. As such, they were the perfect age for SpongeBob SquarePants LEGO® Sets, and a couple of these sets made their way into the house at the appropriate time, particularly from the 2009 wave:3834 Good Neighbours at Bikini Bottom and 3831 Rocket Ride spring to mind.
The theme wound up in 2012 with a limited couple of releases including 3818 Bikini Bottom Undersea Party.
And then the series was…cancelled? Put on hiatus? Not to return on a regular basis until 2017. But we have not seen any new LEGO Sets tying in with the series, until now.
And now that people who grew up with the original episodes of SpongeBob have attained a certain level of maturity, they may well start to feel pangs of nostalgia.

Squiward has gone form sand green to mint and Gary’s spiral has changed directions (to be fair, this is more likely a construction error from many years ago).

So, while this set is priced at AUD349.99, the 3834 Good Neighbours at Bikini Bottom has sold on Bricklink for around $420AUD. While this new set is an expensive display set, I was surprised to see that the old set with 425 pieces has a similar perceived value.
Of course, if we are aiming for nostalgia, where would be without 40858 LEGO® BrickHeadz SpongeBob SquarePants Figure
