10 New Smart Play Pokemon Sets Revealed!

The First LEGO Pokemon sets to have been released were large playsets, Primarily aimed at adult collectors (probably those who specifically grew up with Pokemon in the 90s and early 00s. Today, the LEGO Group have revealed 10 sets for release in August (preorder now!).

These are very much play sets, aimed at kids from 6 years and up. The sets incorporate Smart Play – Two sets include smart bricks and tags, while the rest of the sets are equipped with the smart tage. Great news: Already have a Smart Brick from Star Wars? They are the same as the Smartbricks included in 72164 and 72167. You can use them to bring any of the other pokemon ‘Smart Play Compatible ‘sets to life.

I have been enjoying my own experience with Smart Play – not relying on Star Wars sets, but rather putting the Tags into my old (Classic) spaceships and the like.

This new roll out does raise the question, however: When will Smart Play roll out to countries that are not USA, UK, Australia, France, Germany and Poland? For now, these sets will only be available where Smart Play has been rolled out. Is this for Supply chain or Customer service reasons? Unfortunately, at this stage, we havenot had that information available to us on the Ambassadors Network.

My thoughts

I’m not the target demographic for these sets! My kids grew up with Pokémon. I did not! But, I am intrigued to see how various aspects of Poketraining and battles work here. The LEGO Star Wars Dogfight feature doesn’t quite function as advertised – with no clear directional functionality working, rather ships behaving as if they have been hit, regardless of where the attacker is shooting from. At the same time, the sets needed to be forgiving, while kids came to get familiar with putting the smartbrick in and out of models, rather than adding the difficulty of correct alignment of the brick in the model.

Close-up of a yellow gaming device with two transparent battery blocks on top, surrounded by toy figures, including a red and white Poké ball.

While Star Wars fans can justly say that the Smart Play Sounds are not perfect recreations (to be fair, the models are not perfect recreations either.), Pokemon come with a glorious 8-bit soundtrack ideally suited to a synthesised by the Smart Brick. I cant wait to hear how it sounds.

While the Smart Brick All-in-One sets are more expensive, it became apparent in the Star Wars sets that the pricing of Smart Play compatible sets is not significantly worse than comparable models, when adjusted for inflation. I can’t wait for the world where Smart Play has rolled out across all themes, but with tags widely available, and Smart Bricks included with only a few sets.

I am concerned about the restricted marketing of the platform for now, too. Will the rest of the world have the opportunity for collecting their Pokemon? Or will we see a surge in black market, underground Smart Play sales in these markets.I suspect time will tell.

I suspect I will have more to say about Smart Play in the Future, but for now, I remain cautiously optimistic.

What do you think of these new Pokémon sets? Will you pick up a couple? Or have you gotta catch ’em all? Leave your comments below.

LEGO Pokemon Smat Play sets will be released in August 2026, but can be preordered from LEGO.com (in selected Markets) now!
