Brickvention2024 is almost here! This time, it feels a little personal.

Brickvention 2024 is only a weeks away, taking place at the heritage listed Royal Exhibition Buildings in Melbourne, we are excited to see AFOLs converging from around the country and around the world. The Public Expo is taking place on Saturday 20th January and Sunday 21st of January 2024. If you are planning to go, you can get your tickets here. Sessions are starting to fill up and some have already sold out. If you see me there, some and say G’day.

This year, Shelly Timson and I have given our Fabuland Brickheadz from 2019 a face lift with some new characters enjoying a day at the amusement park. This year marks the 45th anniversary of the launch of LEGO Fabuland in 1979, and it felt like an appropriate time to celebrate. Here’s a quick look at some of our older models.

But why does this feel special to me? For one, it was fifteen years ago, at Brickvention 2009 that while attending the public expo, I discovered that there was such a thing as an Adult Fan of LEGO: an AFOL. To discover that it was OK to play with LEGO in my own right, rather than to just do it vicariously through my kids. As a result of this, I was also directed towards the online LEGO Community: The Brothers Brick, Eurobricks and From Bricks to Bothans; I subscribed to Brick Journal, I joined a LEGO User Group, and then I started to fall down a couple of rabbit holes. Some of the exhibitors at that first event remain friends to this day.

Things have changed a little over the years.

Today, I have been to Billund a couple of times, attended LEGO fan events around the world, had the chance to talk with designers, managers and archivists at the LEGO Group, to say nothing about spending just a little too much time writing stuff. So, please pardon me if I seem a little misty eyed over the weekend. Perhaps I’m just tired!

But seriously, If you are at Brickvention over the weekend, come and say hi. I might have some tiles. If you are at the convention day on Friday the 19th, Jay from Jay’s Brick Blog and I will have a session on stage, just like an episode of the Extra Pieces, only in real life… we are looking forward to catching up with you all. Unfortunately, convention tickets are now all sold out.

  1. What a journey! You’ve paved the way for us newer AFOLs to emerge from the dark! 🙂
