LEGO® CAR FAMILY ADDS A NEW VERSION OF A LEGEND: TWO-IN-ONE LEGO PORSCHE 911 TURBO AND 911 TARGA SET REVEALED

The Creator Expert, and now 18+ sets featuring various iconic motor cars have been popular for a few years now, and this year the LEGO Group are taking a trip back in time to the late 1970s- early 80s with announcement of 10295: LEGO® Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa – Two builds in one (but only one at a time…).

As a child of that era, this was the car to aspire to, as a sign of success. Many of my peers were found with magazines containing pictures of this car, under the bed…

Due for release in March 1 (February 16th for VIPs online), this set has 1458 pieces, and gives you the option to build either the 911 Turbo, or the Targa version.

The set will cost $USD149.99/€129.99/119.99 GBP/229.99 AUD/199.99 CAD/1499.99 BRL

The LEGO® Group has wound the clock back to the era of big hair, new wave and punk rock for the launch of the latest LEGO car set, the two-in-one LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa bridges the gap across two decades to unite this pair of iconic sports cars.

The LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa have been faithfully recreated in LEGO brick form as a two-in-one model, allowing the builder to build a coupe or convertible from the same set. Both are rich in detail, with from their rear-mounted engines to their classic silhouettes and sculpted sports seats in eye-catching orange-nougat.

Channelling the essence of the ubiquitous German sports car, the LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa variants feature all the hallmarks of their namesakes, from the aerodynamic shoulder line to angled headlamps and sculpted bonnet with Porsche badge and rear-mounted flat six ‘boxer’ engine.

“We know that the Porsche 911 evokes a certain magic for customers and fans of our brand worldwide, and the latest LEGO additions to the 911 family – the LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa – are no different.

“These incarnations of our sportscar icon, accurately capture the unmistakeable design of the cars they are based on, and are set to bring much enjoyment to a new family of fans.”

Fabian Schmölz, Exterior Designer at Porsche

Beneath their elegant silhouettes, the LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa variants hide a wealth of detail. On both versions of the model, the 2+2 sports seats and dashboard are finished in dark orange and nougat, an eclectic colour scheme based on contemporary upholstery options from the Porsche 911. Further interior details include a handbrake, gearshift and functional steering, while the front seats also tilt forward for access to the rear bench seats.

Several features which are unique to the 911 Turbo and 911 Targa variants of the set ensure they are equally characterful but distinct when built. The LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo sports distinctive Turbo badging, a wide rear axle, turbocharger and intercooler, denoting its blistering performance credentials. Its athletic look is completed with an integrated rear spoiler.

“Taking ownership of a brand-new sports car is an experience to savour and this is a feeling we wanted to recreate for LEGO fans. Few nameplates provoke as much emotion as that of the Porsche 911, and it has been a fascinating journey stepping back in time to one of the most evocative decades for car design and society.

“As we were designing the car, the hardest decision to make was whether we would make the Turbo or Targa variant of the car. It was such a tough call that we engineered the ability to build the LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and Targa from a single set. Without doubt, fans of the 911 all over the world who have long admired these cars will love the opportunity to build both versions!”

Mike Psiaki, Design Master at the LEGO Group

The LEGO Porsche 911 Targa’s roof is fully removable and can be stowed underneath the hood of the car. The iconic Targa Bar completes the look, along with Targa badging and a brick-built wraparound rear window.

Four Porsche adverts from throughout the 911’s history have been selected to be made into LEGO art prints, as part of a limited-edition LEGO Porsche owners pack. Along with the collectible art prints, the pack also contains a certificate of ownership and a card wallet in a smart collector’s portfolio. The LEGO Porsche owners pack will be available in limited numbers for customers who order the LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa set through LEGO’s free VIP loyalty program.

LEGO is also offering brick and Porsche fans alike the chance to hear the stories behind the design of the LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa with an online car meet to be hosted via LEGO.com on 16th February exclusively for members of LEGO’s free VIP loyalty program. The session will be led by LEGO design master Mike Psiaki, along with Exterior Designer at Porsche, Fabian Schmölz and Jörg Thilow of Porsche Heritage and Museum.

The talk will delve into the rich heritage of the original Porsche 911 and its beautiful, elegant yet sporty design that has been adapted over the years but never changed. As a result, every generation is instantly recognisable as a Porsche 911.

“Working closely together has enabled us to create detailed brick models with accuracy that is second-to-none. This is the kind of model where you’ll always find a new detail or refinement that is true to the original, including building blocks specifically designed for our 911.

“These latest LEGO incarnations of our sportscar icon, along with the LEGO artworks inspired by the past, capture not only the unmistakeable design of the cars that inspired them, but also the changing times.”

Jörg Thilow, product development at Porsche Heritage & Museum

I hope there will be enough of this Gift with purchase to be available for Day 1 purchasers of this set. I’ll have to admit, I am tempted to be up first thing on launch day, to pick these up.

I am a sucker for vintage advertising. I was able to track down some of the originals that the LEGO-ised versions are based on…

As is befitting of a major car launch, LEGO has also taken a trip to a fantasy LEGO Car Factory, with a 1980s-inspired animation of the LEGO Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa rolling along the production line, inspired by a bygone era of car production and extravagant launches.

If you are a habitual collector of the LEGO Adult Builder Car Series, this looks like it will be a day one purchase, especially with the retro artwork included in the gift with purchase. Hopefully, there will be enough of these to meet demand, compared with other GWPs we have seen lately.

What do you think of this iconic vehicle’s preview? Are you sold on it? Will you wait and see? why no leave your comments below, and until next time,

Play Well.
