Full Range of LEGO Super Mario Sets Revealed

Today, the LEGO Group and Nintendo have finally revealed the full product range for LEGO Super Mario. With Game Play based around a real world brick built world, along with familiar friends, enemies, power ups and hazards, LEGO Super Mario is set to change the way players interact with Mario, based on the interactive Mario Brick.

I have had the opportunity to try out some of the new range, as well as take part in a Q&A with Jonathan Bennink – the Digital Design Lead. I will be presenting the results of these over the next few posts. BUT if you want to see the full range of sets, read on. We have pictures of them all, as well as US/ Euro AND Australia and New Zealand Pricing!

The LEGO Group and Nintendo reveal full product range for new LEGO® Super Mario™ play experience

The wait is over… today’s full reveal shows fans how they can ‘level up’ their LEGO® Super Mario™ gameplay, creating exactly the LEGO universe they want their beloved character to come to life in!

BILLUND, June 16, 2020: The LEGO Group today revealed the full product portfolio for its LEGO® Super Mario™ experience. Fans can expand on the LEGO Super Mario range announced in April with a whole new range of Expansion Sets, collectible Character Packs and Power-Up Packs. The result of a unique partnership with Nintendo, LEGO Super Mario will reinvent the way people interact with Super Mario in the physical world. The products announced today give fans the chance to build Mario’s house, search for treasure hidden by Toad, and defeat a Koopa Troopa in the Guarded Fortress. And of course that’s not all!

The partnership was announced earlier this year, and in April the fun-packed Adventures with Mario Starter Course was revealed alongside two Expansion Sets. The Starter Course is key to unlocking the entire play, being the only set to feature the interactive LEGO® Mario™ figure that collects coins in game levels created with LEGO bricks. LEGO Super Mario brings new interactivity and gameplay to the traditional LEGO brick experience.

All sets come with their own series of unique challenges and characters for fans to play with, or to play against friends. In addition to the Piranha Plant Power Slide Expansion Set and Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle Expansion Set announced in April, the Expansion Set line-up includes: the Guarded Fortress Expansion Set, the Mario’s House & Yoshi Expansion Set, the Toad’s Treasure Hunt Expansion Set, the Desert Pokey Expansion Set, the Whomp’s Lava Trouble Expansion Set and the Boomer Bill Barrage Expansion Set.

Also announced today are ten collectible enemy characters that are available in blind bag Character Packs, adding that extra level of excitement. Each pack will contain a buildable character and action tag to play with – it could be a Paragoomba, Fuzzy, Spiny, Buzzy Beetle, Bullet Bill, Bob-omb, Eep Cheep, Blooper, Urchin or Peepa!

Every Expansion Set and collectible Character is made to be used with the Adventures with Mario Starter Course, for an enhanced play experience. The entry point set features seven action bricks for different interactions with the LEGO Mario figure, which has LCD screens in its eyes, mouth and belly to display instant reactions to movement, color and action bricks. In May, the LEGO Group and Nintendo also announced a series of Power-Up Packs – including Cat Mario and Builder Mario – to help boost gameplay with a variety of suits for LEGO Mario that each reveal new features and powers.

“With today’s announcement, 16 LEGO Super Mario sets have been introduced and I am really looking forward to seeing how people’s play expands with these and the unique Power-Up Packs,” said Takashi Tezuka, Executive Officer and Game Producer of Nintendo Co., Ltd. “Each player’s preferences and imagination are different. By adding already owned LEGO bricks onto the Starter Course, and different LEGO Super Mario expansion sets, we hope that people can create various different Mario worlds and continue enjoying them indefinitely.”

“The reaction to LEGO Super Mario has been incredible,” said Jonathan Bennink, Digital Design Lead on LEGO Super Mario, the LEGO Group. “Super Mario is such an icon – and fans have been highly anticipating the release of the full details of the product line. Our entire range – from the Starter Course to the Power Up Packs, through to the Expansion Sets and Character Packs – have been built to bring Super Mario, his friends – and his enemies – to life. We love how creative Nintendo and LEGO fans are, and can’t wait for them to unleash their imaginations in how they interact with Super Mario in the real world.”

Fans will also love the free LEGO Super Mario app created by the LEGO Group, a supporting feature to further enhance the physical play experience. It keeps track of scores to encourage continuous rebuilding, as well as providing digital building instructions with zoom and rotate viewing tools to make building easier, suggestions of other creative ways to build and play, and a safe forum to share ideas with friends.

The full LEGO Super Mario assortment will launch August 1st2020, but fans can pre-order the LEGO Super Mario Starter Course on www.LEGO.com and from select leading retailers around the world now (subject to availability).

This set is key. It is the only way you can get the Mario Brick. It is required to get the maximum play value out of the expansion sets.

The entry point set features seven action bricks for different interactions with the LEGO Mario figure, which has LCD screens in its eyes, mouth and belly to display instant reactions to movement, color and action bricks.

Expansion sets

Every Expansion Set and collectible Character is made to be used with the Adventures with Mario Starter Course, for an enhanced play experience.

All sets come with their own series of unique challenges and characters for fans to play with, or to play against friends. 71362 – LEGO® Super Mario™ Guarded Fortress Expansion Set

(49,99 USD/EUR – $AU79.99/ $NZ89.99)

“Then a very iconic sight in each Mario course, it’s the Fortress at the end. And we made a lego version of this here. There are 3 different paths towards the fortress. Theres a Piranha plant, a bo-bomb (thats a lot of fun – you can get a lot of coins from it, until Mario blows up. Yeah., you have to time it to not hit it when the bomb blows). There is a feature whereby you can take the finish tile from the starter kit, and put it here. When you land on it, the flag gets raised: just like in the game.”

71363 – LEGO® Super Mario™ Desert Pokey Expansion Set

(19,99 USD/EUR- $AU29.99/$NZ34.99)

(29,99 USD/EUR – $AU49.99/$NZ59.99)

Check out my hands on review soon:

This level features Koopa as well as a Piranha plant and an extra time block. Putting Mario on the slide shows off the use of the accelorometer hardware – but don’t let him hit the plants, or he will lose time and multiplier bonuses.

71366 – LEGO® Super Mario™ Boomer Bill Barrage Expansion Set

(29,99 USD/EUR – $AU49.99/$NZ59.99)

Check out my hands on review soon: this set has a Shy Guy figure, featuring a new printed 3 stud wide round tile, as well as a mushroom The Boomer Bills buzz Mario as he attempts to cross the water on the swing.

71367 – LEGO® Super Mario™ Mario’s House & Yoshi Expansion Set

(29,99 USD EUR – $AU49.99/$NZ59.99)

From the start, LEGO  and the Nintendo team really wanted Mario to have a home. A place where he can get some naps in , in between all the running and Jumping that he does. So, we have created Mario’s House. And in Mario’s house we have his best buddy Yoshi, who he can talk to, and get some coins from. There’s a little hammock here, beneath the tree, and you can slowly gently rock him to sleep. And of course, he can go into his little house as well.

Power-up Packs

In May, the LEGO Group and Nintendo also announced a series of Power-Up Packs – including Cat Mario and Builder Mario – to help boost gameplay with a variety of suits for LEGO Mario that each reveal new features and powers.

71370 – LEGO® Super Mario™ Fire Mario Power-Up Pack

(9,99 USD/EUR – $AU12.99/$NZ15.99)

When LEGO® Mario™ is powered up with this suit, he can gain Fire Attack power – a new way to attack enemies and collect extra coins.

71371 – LEGO® Super Mario™ Propeller Mario Power-Up Pack

(9,99 USD/EUR- $AU12.99/$NZ15.99)

My second favourite powerup pack is the Propellor Costume – the Cat is my favourite. With this costume, Mario takes to the sky, and you can fly around the room. By twisting and turning and changing speed, you can collect coins. We hope this will stimulate fans to build levels throughout their house, and not just in one place: he can fly from one bit of the level to another.

Jonathan Bennink

Propeller sounds are triggered when players dress LEGO® Mario™ in this suit and make him ‘fly’ to try and win coins. The propeller suit allows LEGO Mario™ to take to the skies, making new sounds as he soars through the air and collects coins. Take LEGO Mario™ on an action-packed flight and turn your living room into a giant LEGO Super Mario™ level!

71372 – LEGO® Super Mario™ Cat Mario Power-Up Pack

(9,99 USD/EUR – $AU12.99/$NZ15.99)

Check out my hands on review soon

This suit gives LEGO® Mario™ cat-like skills. Dress him in the special pants and cap and he’ll start to meow and purr. Wearing this suit gives Cat Mario™ the special power to walk up vertical obstacles and collect coins. It’s the purr-fect way to have even more fun with the LEGO Super Mario™ levels.

71373 – LEGO® Super Mario™ Builder Mario Power-Up Pack

(9,99 USD/EUR – $AU12.99/$NZ15.99)

When LEGO® Mario™ is wearing this suit, players can earn digital coins by making him stomp hard on LEGO bricks in the course they have created. The more he stomps, the more coins you win! It’s a brick-bashingly brilliant way to have even more fun with the LEGO Super Mario™ levels.

Character Packs

Also announced today are ten collectible enemy characters that are available in blind bag Character Packs, adding that extra level of excitement. Each pack will contain a buildable character and action tag to play with – it could be a Paragoomba, Fuzzy, Spiny, Buzzy Beetle, Bullet Bill, Bob-omb, Eep Cheep, Blooper, Urchin or Peepa!

71361 – LEGO® Super Mario™ Character Packs

(4,99 USD/3,99 EUR – $AU5.99/$NZ5.99)

these Blind bags have one of 10 enemies, each with a unique action brick, to help LEGO Super Mario to Collect Coins.

Checkout my first look at the Bullet Bill bag soon.

Watch This Space!

There is a lot to take in here. LEGO and Nintendo have both been long thought to be the perfect fit together: they share corporate values or family friendly play, as well as being industry leaders in their own fields. But will LEGO Super Mario be a winner? Time will tell: the starter set is already available for preorder online, in some markets, and also at select retailers. I have had a chance to play with a few of these sets, and will post my reviews over the next few days.
